5 Digital Marketing Tips for Beginners
If you’re just starting out with social media here are 5 digital marketing tips for beginners to help you improve your online presence and connect with your target audience.
Be consistent with branding
The same profile image, ideally your business logo, should be used across all social media platforms for brand consistency and recognition. If possible try to also make sure that your account names or handles are consistent, ideally the business name. However, branding is more than just your profile image, it’s “how people perceive your product, business, or even you as a person”. Make sure that your content and activity help to create the impression that you want people to have of your business. Be consistent with your tone and style, the fonts you use and perhaps even the colours you use.
Claim and manage your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the information that is shown about your business on the right-hand side of Google when someone searches for you. Having an up to date Google Business Profile (previously Google My Business listing) is a great way to improve your local SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). With the name change now comes the option to edit your Google Business Profile in search.
Your Google Business Profile is important as it can be the first impression potential customers have of your business. Make sure your opening hours and business information are up to date, upload photos and videos, and use the Post feature to share news, events and offers. There is also a Products feature to promote products and services.
Know your audience
Think about your audience and work backwards from there. Who are you trying to reach? Where are they online? You don’t have to be on every social media platform, but you do want to be where your audience is. (Also make sure that the platforms you choose tie in with your business objectives).
What are their needs/questions/pain points? How can you help them and give them value? Thinking about the needs and challenges of your audience, and creating content that is relevant and helpful to them is the idea behind content marketing. This can help to reach the right audience and retain them as customers.
Create video content
Video content is key, particularly short-form video content. As well as TikTok, Reels and Stories, you have YouTube Shorts and Pinterest Idea Pins. Attention spans are (super) short and video is easy to consume.
Video is a great way to easily and quickly tell your story. Again, think about what content your audience would find helpful and interesting. The best way to get engagement on videos is to have a hook, keep videos short and snappy, and offer value to your ideal customer.

Be authentic and build connection
Being authentic on social media is key. Tell your story. Show the people behind the business as this can help to build trust and connection with your audience. (Remember that people buy from people).
Think about how you can connect authentically with your audience and grow an online community. Make sure you are acknowledging and replying to comments (on Instagram you can reply to comments with a Reel and on TikTok you can reply to questions and comments with a TikTok video). Engage with other accounts. Start conversations. Don’t forget the social part of social media.
