[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We recently shared a blog post by comms2point0 on our Facebook page on why your Facebook work profile work-around needs to end urgently which references another post by Action Sprout on using fake profiles to access your business page – both hammering home the message that businesses should not be administrating their Facebook page through a second account.  It is an important point – Facebook is having a fresh clamp-down on fake profiles, so if you set up your business page through a fake work profile or let staff create second profiles to manage the page you risk losing access to it.  And after spending time, energy and money growing your page do you really want to take that risk?

As both posts emphasise, it is against the Facebook Terms of Policy to create a personal account for a business, you can only create a business page from a genuine profile.

The comms2point0 post quotes the all-important Facebook T&Cs:

  1. You will not provide any false personal information on Facebook, or create an account for anyone other than yourself without permission.
  2. You will not create more than one personal account.

We have heard businesses say that they created a fake profile because they don’t want their personal profile linked to their business page.  As nobody can see the personal data of page admins this is not something that you have to worry about.

The advice?

  • It is strongly recommended that you remove anyone with a fake profile as a page admin.
  • Always have at least one other genuine Facebook profile as a page admin to ensure you don’t lose access completely.
  • Never use a communal work account that all admins can log into.

The Action Sprout post goes on to say that another big problem with fake profiles is that they are often given full administrative access.  You don’t need to give everyone full access, you can assign different page roles as detailed in the table below (the post also gives instructions on how to grant access to team members).[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”4509″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”3″ el_width=”10″ accent_color=”#d89145″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1495727566702{padding-right: 50px !important;padding-left: 50px !important;}”]

And it’s not just about the risk of losing access to your business page because of a fake profile being removed.   Controlling the level of rights and keeping the page roles up to date is also a way of safeguarding your page against hackers.  Make sure you emphasise to staff the importance of secure logins to their personal accounts – if a page admin was to have their personal account hacked, the hacker could then hijack the page by adding themselves as an admin and removing all other admins.  To safeguard the page further you could add extra security measures to your personal profile.

Essentially the key messages are – don’t violate Facebook Terms of Policy and put your business page at risk unnecessarily, and try to make your page as secure as possible by reviewing who has access to it.
