The rise of social media’s popularity has changed the way people find and connect with brands. Therefore standing out from the competition and creating a successful campaign doesn’t solely depend on your advertising budget anymore. Social media provides an opportunity for businesses of all sizes to connect with their target audience; any company can create a social media account and communicate with the public.

Whilst businesses on social media have become fiercely competitive, it is still very important to maintain positive relationships with other businesses online.  Social media allows for an easy way to reach other businesses from the same industry and maintain a good connection.

A great example of how social media can be used to facilitate a relationship between businesses in the same industry (and in honour of National Chocolate Day) is our client, The Scottish Chocolatiers Network. This group predominantly uses social media to build their network and promote the Scottish Chocolate Trail, but it also uses various social platforms to communicate and share tips with each other, whilst raising awareness about the industry throughout Scotland.

Here are a few reasons why you should build that bridge with others in your industry:

Audience
Connecting with others in the same industry can be very useful as you will share a similar target market. Their audience will most likely be interested in your products and services. So connecting with the businesses and sharing their posts or commenting on their content will increase your visibility to their followers/fans.

Research
Being aware of industry leaders and your peers and knowing what they are up to is crucial in order to stay updated. Social media allows you to do this and makes it so easy to research and follow what other businesses in your industry are doing. You can also see how your competitors’ content is perceived by the public and learn from any mistakes.

Collaboration
Building a positive relationship with other businesses in your industry can be a useful experience for both parties. You can collaborate with one another, share information and refer clients to each other. Social media provides the opportunity for these relationships to be accessible and easy to maintain.
